My family absolutely loves doing things together…most of the time. I thought I would clarify “loves doing things together”, because there are times when we would rather be doing our own things, BUT there are times when some good ol’ quality family time are just want we need and want, whether we know it or not.
Our family is quite strongly knitted. We’ve always been. Being a homeschool family we sort of have gotten used to being around each other all.the.time, but now that my brother has a job at a local golf course and I’m now a blogger and VA, staying on top of our schedule is a bit more difficult. We like making plans at least two weeks in advance, so we can all work on getting time “off” to hang with each other.
20 frugal family activities to do TOGETHER
- Day at the beach
There really isn’t all that much expense to this if you live within a couple of hours of the beach, but it definitely is a fun activity for families.
- Go on a picnic
A spontaneous picnic is always the best. One day I would love to go on a picnic in an open space in the woods, and have one of those old-fashioned picnics. I know…sounds romantic, right?
- Go on a “Random Act of Kindness” spree
I would LOVE to do this with my family in the future, where we come up with a list of 5-10 random acts to do in our general vicinity. Of course a budget would be necessary, because I can often get caught up in a “giving mood” and before I know it, I’ve got nothing left.
- Stay up late and tell old stories
I love it when my parents tell me stories of when they were little and growing up. It makes you aware of how much the times have changed, you can see your parents in a different light, and sometimes the stories they tell will leave you laughing your head off!
- Watch a movie outdoors
- Go for a drive out in the middle of nowhere
When I was little, sometimes my parents would put us all in the car and drive. We weren’t going on errands or visiting friends, we were just driving. We would go places we’d never been to before or drive out into the country just sight-seeing. It was wonderful.
- Pack up your bikes and go on a trail
- Have ice cream for dinner
- Start a water fight
- Do a fundraiser for an organization your family loves
- Camp out — in your livingroom
No need spending all kinds of money on buying/renting a camper or buying camping supplies, all you need is some good space, a ton of pillows, air mattresses, blankets, and some good ol’ fun and you are all set to go camping in your own home!
- Volunteer somewhere
- Go shopping for orphans/OCC
My family loves making Christmas special for orphans in the Philippines, so we go shopping for a child or two. When we first started, it really made me stop and think of how fortunate am, because I never have to go without a toothbrush or food on the table. I’m extremely rich compared to so many. (We also do Operation Christmas Child).
- Run competitions
Invite friends and family over for a mini-competition. Challenge them to tug-of-war, three-legged races, egg tosses, etc. I have always loved competitions and this is a great way to do it! If you’re a boy mom, your boys would LOVE this!
- Karaoke night
- Bowling night
Have you heard about KidsBowlFree.com? It happens every summer and is a great way of saving some money and having a great time together as a family. My brother and I used to do this during the summer when we were younger and we always had a blast!
- “Marathon Monday” (All-Day-Something)
- Make your own slip-n-slide
- Explore your area
- Help someone else
