You know how much I enjoy doing things for advent, especially reading books, but Truth in the Tinsel was different. It wasn’t a book, so to say, but rather an activity guide. A guide to making Christmas more about Christ.
The closer we get to Christmas the less we usually think about Christ and more about what to buy for the kids, buying the right Christmas tree, decorating, and all the other hustle and bustle that goes on during the holiday season. Next thing you know, it’s Christmas and you begin to think…”I meant to be more focused on Jesus this month with the kids.”
You can now, with Truth in the Tinsel!
The book took shape when Amanda White (from Oh Amanda!) thought of how she wanted her children to think of Christmas. Not about the gifts, but rather about Jesus. So, when her daughter was only a year old, she took her on an advent-ure, where she put Jesus as the center of season.
How Truth in the Tinsel works:
Each day you will give your children a clue. It’s a picture. Pull it out and wait for the story.
The story isn’t a book, but rather a piece of scripture. You tell your children to pay attention to see if they can find the clue hidden in the word of God. You can have them yell it out, when they hear the clue, or you can have them do something else. Get them excited! You can read the scripture for the day at several times, so they can meditate on it.
After reading the scripture, you can make the ornament. This is the activity. Each day, your child will make their own ornament to represent the story of the birth of Christ. The ornaments won’t be as nice as those from the malls, but they will be in the eyes of the creator, and the story behind each one…priceless.
As the children are making the ornament, talk to them about what they had read earlier in the scripture. Just talk to them.
It can take 30 minutes a day, if you want…but could go on as long as you like.
Make this a family activity!
You can do this ebook with as many children as you like and for as many years as you would like. Just make sure you don’t delete the ebook download!
