When I was homeschooling, I used to love learning about new places, like China or Africa. It always fascinated me how other people, in different countries and continents, lived so much different than I did. The food they would eat. The clothes they would wear. The homes that they lived in. The games that the children played. All of these things were unique, but yet, were very conventional and normal for these people. Going deeper into the geography of the world and studying the many different cultures has been a wonderful and fascinating discovery of how different, and yet how similar, we as a people are.
When we were learning about these places, my mom didn’t just read us books, she had us do some fun hands-on activities. We tried to learn how to use chopsticks, we wrote common sayings in Chinese, read literature books that were based in that country.
As I thought back on my homeschool years, I decided I wanted to share a way for other children to learn, and that is how this ebook came about…
What is Book Traveler: China about?
Book Traveler: China is an ebook devoted to the study of our world, for children in grades K – 4th. They will learn hands-on about the history and culture of the Chinese people, the geography of China, read about the animals that are native to the country, and much more!
My desire for this ebook series, is to have your children explore the world around them by just books and activities, making it fun and exciting to learn about.
If you are a Charlotte Mason homeschooler, this would be the perfect study for China, because it has many of its methods. If you are not a Charlotte Mason homeschooler, don’t worry! This ebook is perfect for all school types, methods, and is great for students of all learning styles.
What will your children learn?
- Books & Narrations
I have selected three books that you and your children will read that is based in China. In each book, your child will see some of ancient China’s culture, while listening to a story that will keep your child’s attention. For older children, you can even have them write a narration, after each book is finished. If your child has never written a narration before, don’t worry, I have an outline with prompts.
- Copywork & Dictations
I have taken copywork selections from the books that I have selected for this study. Each of the copywork pages have been made to be used for children of all writing stages, in both manuscript and cursive. The dictation selections are longer and more advanced for older children.
There are some words that your child may not understand, so I have taken a handful of them and created vocabulary work.
How can you study China, or any other country, without having some geography work? I have created some coloring pages for your children and written some fun facts that I’m sure they will want to share with their friends!
Study two Chinese animals and native plants with your children, with further reading, and video selections. After the study, there is a nature study sheet that they can fill out, with all the information they have learned, over the period of time they have learned.
- History & Landmarks
China is infamous for their Great Wall of China and the Terracotta Army. I have pulled together some fun and insightful resources for you and your child to study.
For older students, I have created 10 math word problems, and similar to the copywork and dictation selections, I have them based on the three books I have selected for this study.
- Games & Activities
What fun is learning if you can’t enjoy what you are doing? This section of the ebook is full of fun activities and games that you and your children can do together to implement what you are studying about China.
- Art & Music
For further study, you and your child can study the many painting and Chinese songs I have collected. This will add to the study of Chinese culture, by seeing the clothing they wore, the activities they did, and instruments they used.
