For many years I remember not celebrating Christmas the traditional way. By traditional, I mean, no Christmas tree, no gifts, no stockings. My family didn’t stop this, because they didn’t like it or because they couldn’t afford it, they put this tradition on pause, because my siblings and I didn’t think about it as the “Birthday for Jesus”. All we thought about was gifts, gifts, gifts! We were being pulled into the commercialism of the holidays and my parents noticed, so they decided to try to do bite it in the butt.
Instead of doing what most people did, we put our full focus on celebrating the birth of Christ. We would have birthday parties for Jesus with our own family, with making Him a cake. It was very special for us.
We also had a manger in our house, instead of a tree, with a baby doll as a plastic representation of the baby Jesus.
As of now, we have gotten back into most of the traditions of Christmas, but minimized. We still don’t do a tree or stockings, but we have a manger, with brightly wrapped gifts packed nicely around it. We have Christmas lights around our house.
One thing still has not changed, though…
We still celebrate JESUS!
