My brother, loved animals! He loved being out in nature. Most of the books I am going to list are books he really enjoyed, or has read when he was a little boy.
Micah, (my brother) was always trying to catch snakes, turtles, fish, or anything that lived in the wild. He knew every single snake that lived in Virginia by just a glance. He knew their habitats and where to find them at our house. He’d catch them and keep them in an aquarium tank, until he was told to let it go. If he wasn’t outside doing something, he was a miserable mess.
With the knowledge of Micah’s love of nature and animals, my mom put every book she could in front of him so he could learn…and be safe!
Now, if you know my brother, you would know he hates reading, but give him a book that has something to do with his interests (it was animals when he was a little kid, now it is golf) and he reads the whole thing! Even to this day, if we have a question about an animal, guess who we go to…Micah! When he was little, Steve Irwin was his “hero.” My brother liked to compare himself with the Crocodile Hunter and talk like him. Micah’s favorite channel was always Animal Planet!
Here is a list of books that my brother has read and loved:
- Fun with Nature
My brother looked and looked at this book, until the cover came off! He read this book all the time, and referenced it whenever he caught an animal. By assignment, he had to learn the habitat of the creature, as well as what it eats, and provide it. Over time, he got really good at it!
- More Fun with Nature
The sequel to the book above. We just found this book recently, and although Micah has “outgrown” his love of animals, he has two younger brothers that want to follow in his footsteps. Honestly, these books are priceless. If you find one, and you have a blooming naturalist, get it! These books’ illustrations and reading level are meant for young children. Easy to read, and written in an easy way to understand.
- Birds Do the Strangest Things
We have several of these books. Both my brothers have read them, and I’m sure my youngest brother will, as well. The books are meant for beginning readers, and have short chapters. Each chapter is dedicated to one bird (in this book) and gives a short description of what the bird’s qualities are, and what they “do.” There are others in this series, too!
- Reptiles and Amphibians
We love guidebooks! We have quite a few. The Reptiles and Amphibian book was my brother’s favorite! If you looked at our book…you could tell. Like I said, he loved snakes, turtles…oh, and frogs! He studied each of these creatures to know where they lived in the world, their habitat, what they ate, how many babies they had, etc. This book isn’t specifically made for children, but that didn’t stop my brother from reading it!
Other books in the series:
- Christian Liberty Nature Reader
Just like the title says, it is a reader. It has chapters, with one animal as the subject in each chapter. This book as well, has been read by my brothers! Some of the creatures they highlight, I’ve never even heard of! (i.e. A Gallfly, a parasol ant, tumblebugs, digger wasps, etc.) There is a series of these books.
- Janette Oaks Animal Friends
Really cute, fictional stories that focus on an animal. Throughout the stories, they will learn about the habitat, diet, and qualities of the animals. A really fun and adorable way to create a liking of animals and books!
I am sure we have more books, but at this moment, I don’t remember…maybe another time, if they come to mind?
