“Turtles are scary…” At least they are to Flower, the skunk, on Bambi 2™.
To me, I think they are really cute, so long as it isn’t a snappy turtle or anything. Now those things are scary! The baby snapping turtles, they are an exception, so long as they don’t bite your fingers. My brother, Micah, who is seventeen now, catches snapping turtles on occasions. Mostly when he was young, like twelve. One day he came up to the house with a shoebox bin with tiny baby turtles…baby snapping turtles! I don’t like mommy snapping turtles and their ability to snap off a finger or arm, but I couldn’t resist picking up the babies. Yes. I’ve held baby SNAPPING TURTLES! They were no bigger than two inches long. So tiny.
I almost picked up a kid (baby goat) out of its pen at a petting zoo at Maymont Park, but my mom caught me just in time… bummers.
If it’s a baby creature, I will pick it up, even if it is a bear cub…JUST AS LONG AS THERE IS NO MAMA TO COME AND ATTACK ME! I’m so glad that human mamas are not like bears, in the sense that they will let you hold their babies.
All this to say, turtles are so cool!
My brother and I grew up learning all about turtles in our area, such as: what they eat, what is there habitat, etc. We were educated in this because of the Steve Irwin my brother was…
A Booklist About Turtles:
- One Tiny Turtle

- Baby Turtle’s Tale
- Sea Turtle Summer
Turtles are so perfect to teach your child(ren) about animal study. Have them find one, put it in an aquarium tank (We always have had one or more for the boy’s wildlife finds.), pull out your field guides, identify the turtle and study about its habitat and build it! Turtles are amazing creatures to study.
