As a girl, horses used to be my absolute favorite animal, and to this day, they still hold a very dear place in my heart, although I was won over by another animal species. I would always buy a horse calendar and once the year was through, I’d cut the pictures out and tape them to my wall. I read all the horse classics an watched every movie that involved a horse that I possibly could. I read books about horses and how to care for them, and how to ride them. I dreamed about one day riding them and owning a horse of my own. I learned all about the different types of horses, the different colors, and different riding styles. To say I was addicted was an understatement.
What little girl doesn’t love horses?
My brother’s love horses, too, just not as much as my younger self did. They actually get our bar stools, put pillows on the seat for saddles, and rock back and forth, with their hand holding invisible reins. It is so funny to watch.
12 books for horse-lovers:
The large majority of these books listed below are books I have personally read myself and really enjoyed. I tried to include a few books that younger children can read, around the ages of 6-8, but the majority of the books are for older children, probably around the ages of 10+.
My favorite horse movies:
- Black Stallion
- Horse Crazy
- War Horse (Disclaimer: this movie should be watched prior to, or alongside, older children)
